Come Fly Away, Come Fly with Me…In NYC

Just as everyone is ready for a break from old man winter, Charles Fazzino releases his newest New York City limited edition, “Come Fly Away, Come Fly with Me…In NYC.”  It is a breathe of fresh spring air…colorful, and clear, and uplifting. “I meant for this piece to evoke freedom of spirit and new beginnings,” said Fazzino. “The sky is full of white fluffy clouds and wherever you go in NYC, you can look up and feel a sense of adventure and playfulness. The butterflies and dragonflies are a metaphor as they launch on their flight of joy and whimsy. It’s a fun piece and a fun look at the city I love.

New York City: Fazzino’s Favorite Subject

“Come Fly Away, Come Fly with Me…NYC” is just the latest in a very long line of Charles Fazzino tributes to The City that Never Sleeps. In fact, if you considered the entire Fazzino collection spanning over 30 years all together, you would find a pretty accurate historical picture of New York’s transformation. “I love New York and will always love New York,” Said Fazzino. “I grew up here. It’s my hometown and no matter where I go in the world, collectors ask me to keep drawing it. Have no fear…I can’t imagine my collection without NYC as a centerpiece.”

RAKU

Dining Out With Fazzino

All over the world, Charles Fazzino hears from collectors about restaurants they have eaten in that feature his artwork on the walls. The most recent is Raku Sweets in Las Vegas. An intimate Japanese/French-style dessert bar, Raku only seats 13 customers at a time, but the experience is almost as delectable as the desserts. Each hand-made dessert is made right in front of you and presented in an interesting and colorful way. You can even eat the menus! The attention to detail and craftsmanship employed in the restaurant make it the perfect venue for Charles Fazzino’s “We Are the World Mural” featured prominently on the wall.

Fazzino at The Art of Pop & Comics at Coral Springs Museum of Art

Several hundred people turned out for the opening night reception of the Art of Pop & Comics Exhibition at the Coral Springs Museum of Art on Thursday, March 5th. Highlighting the show are five new originals from Fazzino, all pertaining to the theme of the show: “A Cartoon Celebration of the Masters,” “A Simpson’s Selfie,” “Felix the Cat in Outer Space,” “Batman and Batgirl,” and “Spiderman III.”

“A Cartoon Celebration of the Masters” is the most ambitious work in the show. An homage to the Masters, Fazzino seamlessly folded some of our favorite cartoon characters into the most famous scenes painted by some of the Masters, including Vincent Van Gogh, Georgia O’Keefe, Leonardo da Vinci, Edvard Munch, René Magritte, Salvador Dali, Andrew Wyeth, Joan Miró, Jackson Pollock, Claude Monet, and Georges Seurat. “This is a tribute piece,” said Fazzino. “The paintings I chose from the Masters are so incredibly recognizable….as are the characters now interwoven throughout them. It’s a meeting of two worlds with two different languages that come together in this one, intricately assembled, composition.”

U-0323 LR

“I wanted to choose some characters that aren’t necessarily the most popular today, but that everyone can relate to,” said Fazzino about his original titled “Felix the Cat in Outer Space,” “Felix was one of my favorites growing up and I actually remember one episode when he went into space and his bag of tricks turned into a satellite.”

U-0321 LR

“A Simpson’s Selfie” highlights how so many of our cartoon characters have evolved to be almost human-like. “Who couldn’t’ see the Simpsons touring NYC in a taxi and taking a bunch of selfies,” stated Fazzino.

Of course, the exhibition was rounded out with the obligatory superheroes (Batman, Batgirl, and Spiderman) and a celebration of our good friends Popeye and Olive Oil.
The exhibition runs from March 5th through May 23rd at the Coral Springs Art Museum located at 2855 Coral Springs Rd, Coral Springs, FL. Telephone is 954-340-5000.

Fran Kessler Paint Party Artwork

How about a nice evening filled with paints, canvases, smocks, friends, laughter, wine, and tapas. Sounds perfect, right? Well, it’s the newest social craze and we think it’s just marvelous. Our Sales Director Fran Kessler experienced it first hand at Muse Paint Bar in Norwalk, Ct. “What a fantastic experience,” commented Kessler. “I went with a group of friends and we had a great time. When you arrive, there is an easel already set up with your name on it and all of the supplies you need. There were about 40-50 people there so the place was hopping. Everyone works on the same image and you know going in what you’re going to paint. First things first… we ordered tapas and a glass of wine… then we picked up our paint brushes and got to work. The instructor in the front of the room guided us step-by-step and each one of us walked out with our own masterpiece.  It was so much fun!”

We wanted to find out more about this phenomenon so we Googled “Paint Bars.” Several came up, but the one that struck us the most was called Paint Nite. Paint Nite is an organization that partners with venues all over the world to throw painting parties and events. When we say all over the world, we mean ALL OVER THE WORLD. You can sign up and attend a Paint Nite almost anywhere, including throughout the US and Canada, Argentina, Australia, South Africa, and the UK! We had no idea this was such a trend.

Paint Nite refers to their events as “creative drinking,” but there is no doubt that the focus is on the art. We love the fact that there are so many people out there who want to feed their artistic souls. Muse Paint Bar, in fact, even runs private events and kids events. What a fantastic outlet for kids.

So, as you can see, we are a fan of paint parties. Consider attending one… or throw your own!

Today, we grab our suitcases and head back to the United States from Japan for a Charles Fazzino look into one of the most visited cities in the world: San Francisco, California.

Fazzino’s Newest San Francisco 3D Pop Art

Let’s Go Fly a Kite…San Francisco is the latest Fazzino release on the city by the bay. “I have always loved San Francisco,” said Fazzino. “It has a personality all its own. The city is colorful….the people are colorful…the food is colorful….there is always something fun going on. I drew the kites to symbolize the cities independent and free-flowing identity. They are unique in shape and celebrate the way that San Franciscans seem to live life in full swing!”

Charles Fazzino first released a limited edition about San Francisco in 1992. It was titled “I Left my Heart in San Francisco” and featured many of the cities tourist highlights including Ghirardelli Square and the Fisherman’s Wharf. He soon followed that up with a tribute to the San Francisco 49ers in 1999, the NFL’s toast of the town!

Did You Know You Can Commission Your Own Fazzino?

Charles Fazzino has painted hundreds, if not thousands, of original works. His subjects cover the gamut from cityscape to popular culture to sports to professions, and beyond. But even he hasn’t painted it ALL yet. Hence, the demand for Charles Fazzino commissioned original works. Sometimes a client wants a specific view of a particular place, but in many instances, the commissions become a lot more personal. They celebrate peoples’ lives and homes and livelihoods. Fazzino has been asked to celebrate special occasions and pay tribute to relatives, friends, and family.

This painting was commissioned by a collector in Germany who wanted a celebration of the falling of the Berlin Wall combined with The Brandenburg Gate and particular aspects of the city. In addition, he wanted it done in a particular color scheme. Fazzino was happy to oblige.

This New York collector wanted his favorite artist to pay tribute to his favorite spy…James Bond:

U-0322 LR

In 2014, Fazzino was commissioned to create a painting celebrating the 25th anniversary of a premier media services, production, creative, and digital interactive company. Fazzino was able to take the entire history of the company and present it in one spell-binding image. It was unveiled at the official anniversary party and it made quite a statement.

Sometimes the commissions are quite personal. In this instance, a family wanted to pay tribute to the family patriarch. The result was an artwork that encompasses the essence of a man…his life…his successes…and all that he loves. An incredibly touching celebration.

U-0228LR

Then there are the celebrities. This piece was commissioned as a gift for supermodel and actress Kate Upton.

U-0295 LR

“I love doing commission work, but it can be incredibly challenging,” says Charles Fazzino. “It’s incredibly gratifying when someone wants me to capture something that is so important to them in my characteristically three-dimensional style. Sometimes it’s a struggle to maintain my artistic flow while making sure I meet all of the client’s expectations but I’m so proud when I see the smiles and hear how much these pieces touch people. Sometimes, the works are so personal that I end up feeling like I’m ‘part of the family’ and that’s just fine by me.”

Fazzino Brings A New Dimension To Guitar Art

What is it about artists and music? Not to stereotype, but do you know an artist who works without music? We’re sure they are out there but we don’t know any. Classical, Rock, Jazz….they usually have something blaring. (Here’s a secret…..with Fazzino, it’s usually dance music!). But so many artists take it a step farther and allow the music to inspire their artwork. One of Pablo Picasso’s earliest works was his guitar-themed sculpture, created literally from paper and string. It was like no other sculpture before it and became the basis for one of his most famous series of works. Maybe in tribute to his favorite Master (and maybe not….) Charles Fazzino found a way to adapt the guitar to his own purposes about 5 years ago. And he hasn’t stopped painting on them since.

“There has always has been a close connection between the visual artist and the musical artist,” said Fazzino. “We are both storytellers. So I figured why not tell my musical story on an instrument used by a musical artist. Guitars, actually, are the perfect shape because they provide a nice broad canvas to work on. And the thick sides are a perfect vehicle for my 3D elements. There is a fluidity between art and music so it’s natural to create are on musical instruments. I’ve had a lot of fun with it. It’s stretched the boundaries of my creativity and has certainly made for some challenging compositions. I was even commissioned to create one commemorating the career of rock star Suzie Quatro. That was a blast!”

Fazzino has painted acoustic and electric guitars. Themes have ranged from the Beatles to Classic Rock and Roll, to Jazz, and even Country Music. Each one comes with a a beautiful custom pedestal and display case and each is a one-of-a-kind creation.

Charles Fazzino has released almost a dozen limited editions about the medical profession, but none before has focused solely on the incredible job that nurses do…well nurses…this one’s for YOU!

Nurses Have Heart

Any of us who have ever had medical treatment KNOW that the doctors would be completely lost without nurses. “I wanted to salute the nurses, in particular,” said Fazzino ” because let’s face it…they’re the ones who really take care of us and so much is expected of them. They are compassionate and efficient, and so hard-working even under the most trying of circumstances. This is a bit of a whimsical view of what they do, but know that it is a heartfelt tribute to them and their profession.”

It’s time to jet across the planet to see one of the world’s most historic places through Fazzino’s eyes: Israel

Small World Line Art LR-ISRAEL-HIGHLIGHT

A Long Tradition of Jewish Art

One of the most often asked questions about Charles Fazzino is, “Is He Jewish?” It’s often assumed that he is because of the breadth of his Jewish and Israel-themed art collection. The reality is that he is not Jewish but he has painted an entire collection of art about the people, the religion, and the place. “Way back when i was at the School of Visual Arts in NYC, i loved to eat at the deli’s on the lower east side. I was already painting city scenes so a lot of my paintings turned into renditions of that area of New York, featuring the people and the culture, most of which was Jewish in nature. People started buying these paintings and talking to me and teaching me more about their lifestyle. I also met a lot of gallery owners who were Jewish and they further encouraged my exploration. I have grown to have an incredible amount of respect for Jewish religion and culture. I am fascinated by it and am always in awe about the historical significance of that area of the world.”

In 2008, Fazzino released a limited edition celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the State of Israel. It is titled, “For Israel, Forever” and commemorates many of the milestones in the country’s short but important history.

ForIsraelForeverTPcolorLR

“A Dream For Peace” was one of the most popular Charles Fazzino artworks of all time. Published in 1997, it depicted Israel and Masada on a background of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The imagery, as well as the title, struck a nerve with many people and it was sold out within months of release.

U-0002 A Dream for Peace

In 1999, Fazzino created the first of what would be a four-piece series titled, “The Celebration Series: A Celebration of Life, A Celebration of Love, A Celebration of Spirit, and a Celebration of Heritage.” “A Celebration of Love” was actually a functional ketubah and many couples gave it center stage during their wedding ceremonies. In the end, Fazzino held back 36 pieces from each of the 4 editions and joined them to create 36 “Celebration Murals.”

Fazzino has also created editions in the shapes of Jewish Stars and Menorahs, whimsically drawn to speak the significant moments and experiences of Jewish Life.

Charles Fazzino Collaborates with Artist Daughter Heather

U-0327 LR

Charles Fazzino and his daughter Heather recently completed their first artistic collaboration together. Titled “Tagging the Big Apple,” it combines Charles Fazzino’s 3D pop art approach with the street art/grafitti style of his daughter’s work. “I got the idea for us to work together from one of my dealers who is really into graffiti art,” said Charles Fazzino. “He asked me to do some graffiti-looking art, but in my 3D style. He’s really into the whole Banksy thing. So, I turned to Heather and asked her to help me come up with a concept. Well, not only did she help me, we ended up collaborating on the piece and working together on it. It was a lot of fun, so we’re planning for this to be the first in a series of works. The next set of pieces will be called “Junkyard Dog” and will be based on Heather’s new bulldog named Missy.”

Heather’s contributions have given Charles’s work an almost edgy feel. The primitive and free-flowing background that Heather created brings a more serious feel to her father’s work.  In an experimental yet sophisticated manner, the Fazzino’s have managed to morph the two genres of street art and pop art into one…and the result is magical!

NYC Little Green Apple LR

Charles Fazzino is famous for painting New York City….and in turn, for using the apple as his signature symbol. With “NYC’S Little Green Apple,” he makes a departure from the norm and goes out on a (tree) limb. :-)

NYC’s Little Green Apple

“Takin’ a Ride Around the Big Apple,” “The Apple is Manhattan,” “Apple-tizingly New York,” and “NYC’s Uptown Apple.” These are all Fazzino apple-shaped limited editions released in the last ten years….and all are sold out. With his latest apple piece, Fazzino decided on a twist – painting the apple green. “I created an original last year and in it was a green apple,” said Fazzino. “People asked me why I was painting a green apple and my answer was pretty simple – not all apples are green. But I just loved the way it turned out so I’m a little bit obsessed with green apples right now. The initial response to the edition has been great and I just think it’s very cute. I’m sure there will be more green apples….and who knows what other colors….in my future.”

Fazzino Apples

The apple has been at the core of Fazzino’s New York City pop art collection for many years. “Broadway’s Big Apple Night” is another currently available apple limited edition and there are always several apple-shaped uniques available but they don’t tend to stay around for long! The apple is even the focus of Fazzino’s first collaboration with his daughter Heather, “Tagging the Big Apple.” That piece is a bit edgier and experimental but the apple shape makes it quintessentially Fazzino.

Cartography is an Art Form All Its Own

“I love maps,” is a statement often heard out of Charles Fazzino’s mouth. “I just think that between the composition and the workmanship, they are a beautiful works of art. The level of detail that the mapmaker has to capture is astounding…even for me!” We recently found out about a cartographer named Katie Kowalsky who has taken the artistry of map-making one step farther and we think what’s she’s done is very cool. Using an application called Mapbox Studio, she created a series of world maps in the style of famous pop artist Roy Lichtenstein, translating Lichtenstein’s signature primary color schemes and strong black lines into a jaw-dropping world map. It was NOT an easy endeavor

lead_large

12536

Map making has been a highly regarded form of expression almost since the beginning of time. The first known attempt at map making is more than 2,500 years old and was done by the ancient Greeks. In the 15th Century, Leonardo da Vinci was celebrated for, among so many other things, his ability to accurately create renderings of the earth. He drew a map for Cesare Borgia in Italy (son of Pope Alexander VI) that was so accurate and useful, it resulted in his being hired as the “Chief Military Engineer.”

1280px-Leonardo_da_Vinci_-_Plan_of_Imola_-_Google_Art_Project

Contemporary artists have also been inspired by the curvature and shape of the earth. Artists, the likes of Ed Ruscha and Julian Schnabel have used the concept of a map as the basis for their own artwork. One of the most famous is Joyce Kozloff, the mother of the Pattern and Decoration movement in the 1970’s. A lifelong activist, she has “fused a love for widespread artistic traditions with an activist temperament.” For decades, she has used the map as the basis for sharing her visionary ideas and concepts with the rest of the world.

B

“The closest i’ve gotten to map making would be my limited edition piece called ‘New York City Is……,” stated Fazzino. The full titled of the work, originally published in  is “NY Is…..13.5 Miles Long, 2.4 Miles Wide, 7.6 Million People, 12,500 Restaurants, 5,800 Subway Cars, 4,375 Buses, 52 Bridges, and The Center of the World!!” We don’t know how accurate it is to call it a map but essentially, it IS Fazzino’s version of a New York City Street Map. It represents a departure for the artist and provides a unique sense of the scale of the city and all it contains.

Fazzino 101: Introduction

fazzino-draws-sochi-olympic-pin-2013LR

This is the first in a series of blogs called, “Fazzino 101.” It’s, “Everything you wanted to know about Charles Fazzino, but were afraid to ask.” In reality, it’s based on a seminar we have given on the life and career of Charles Fazzino, broken down into a few categories: Introduction, How the Artwork is Made, Fazzino and Popular Culture, Fazzino Art and Beyond.

Fazzino 101: An Introduction

Chances are, you know a talented artist. Just like you probably know a talented musician. There are thousands of talented folks out there… all you have to do is watch American Idol or The Voice to know that. You also know that there are talented musicians who make it and become famous, and there are talented musicians who don’t. Along the same lines, there are talented artists who make it and become famous, and there are talented artists who don’t. The big difference between musicians and artists, especially in America, is that we have a cultural appreciation for musicians. When we say Madonna, or the Beatles, or the Rolling Stones, you know who they are. They are part of the fabric of our popular culture, along with movie stars and theatrical artists. They are our idols and our heroes. We virtually worship them. For visual artists, it’s a little bit tougher to break through that clutter and get to the level of notoriety that Charles Fazzino has achieved. There’s not that many famous artists and most of them are no longer on this Earth. So for Charles Fazzino, being able to achieve the level of fame that he has achieved during his lifetime is quite an accomplishment.

We have a theory as to just how he has established that reputation and gained that respect throughout the global art world.  We attribute it really to three factors: Pure Talent, Unique Style and Technique, and Positioning within the Sphere of Popular Culture.

Innovation in Art

Whenever Charles speaks to aspiring young artists, he tells them that main key to breaking through is to come up with something unique, something different; a different type of technique, a different type of imagery; a different way of communicating through visual art that hasn’t been done before. Not an easy thing to do. Picasso was the first of his kind and so were Renoir, van Gogh, and da Vinci and more recently, Roy Lichtenstein, Keith Haring, and Andy Warhol. They weren’t only artists, but they were inventors – doing things in art that had never been done before. Charles Fazzino is, by far, one of the most compelling artistic innovators of his time. His style and technique has evolved over time, but his incredibly detailed and vibrant imagery combined with the intricate 3D technique, has steadily set him apart from many of his contemporaries. There is a uniqueness to the work that makes it immediately recognizable and appreciated.

Popular Culture

This notion of popular culture is incredibly powerful in our society. Painting what resonates with people brings the artist even closer to his audience and that’s exactly what Charles Fazzino does. He’s spent decades infusing his work with imagery, symbols, icons, and representations of people, places, events, and things that we hold dear. His collection is so comprehensive, that we often refer to him as pop culture historian. When you look at the entire collection, it really tells the the history of popular culture in America, and often-times beyond.

So, from where does Charles Fazzino’s success emanate? It’s a combination of the fact that he is an incredibly talented artist who has developed a signature technique, and has positioned himself as somewhat of a popular culture historian. He’s telling a story… he’s telling our story… and he’s telling it back to us in an intimate and engaging way. In the next part of Fazzino 101, we’ll break down that signature technique and show you how it’s done!

Fahklumpt and famisched in this meshuganeh city PROOFLR

This month, Charles Fazzino returns to his roots and releases a whimsical and fun rendering of the Lower East Side of New York City.

Fahklumpt and Famisched in this Meshugeneh City…NYC

While still a student at the School of Visual Arts, Charles Fazzino began painting the restaurants and Deli’s on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. These were his first NYC creations and they were very popular with the locals. The New York City collection has obviously expanded in scope since that time, but Fazzino seems to return to this theme again and again. In this latest release, we find the always-present Katz’s Deli along with the dancing hot dog and bagel, and some unusual characters like Spiderman and the Fidler on the Roof. “I haven’t really done a piece like this since ‘Schmaltzy Shmatteh’s to NY Bobkes’ in 2001,” commented Fazzino. “I love everything about that part of New York City… the sounds, the foods, the culture.”

Fazzino on The Lower East Side

The Lower East Side has been a cornerstone of Fazzino’s New York City pop art collection for many years. “From Fishes to Knishes” was a very popular release in 1994, while “Schlepping on 2nd” came out in 1997. Notice the evolution in style and color palette. “Fahklumpt” makes a very dramatic statement. However, it’s also interesting to note how many of the places and buildings are the same… except of course, for the famous World Trade Center. In fact “Schmaltzy Shmatteh’s” in 1997 was the last time Fazzino included the World Trade Center in a limited edition until the release in 2014 of “Hot Town Summer in the City.”
