Do you swear to tell the Tooth...and nothing but the Tooth PROOFLR

“Do you Swear to Tell the Tooth…the Whole Tooth…and Nothing but the Tooth” is the newest in a long line of satirical, entertaining, and whimsical tributes to the dental industry by Charles Fazzino. Fazzino’s first dental piece “Dentasia” was done in the mid-1990’s after a visit by the artist to the dentist. “I did that piece on a whim,” said Fazzino. “It just hit me as a subject that i could have a lot of fun with…and i did. What happened next was amazing to me. The piece sold out very quickly and collectors started demanding more and more dental artwork. I created my own little niche there.”

Since then, Charles Fazzino has released dozens of limited editions and original paintings about dentistry. He’s combined the Disney characters with dentistry in pieces such as “Visiting the Disney Dentist” and “Disney Dental School.” “Never Long in the Tooth,” “Tooth Story Building,” and “Mouth Under Construction” were highly sought after and sold out in a matter of months after their release dates. “A Dose of Dental Hyjinx” was the most recent release and there are very few left. “Do you Swear….” can be purchased from any authorized Fazzino gallery.

VWG-Summer-2015.indd

Charles Fazzino has been commissioned by The Van Wyck Gazette to create the artwork for the Summer 2015 issue, on newsstands now. The Gazette is a local community news magazine that caters to Upstate, NY and and features the local arts and culture inherent to Dutchess, Ulster, and Orange Counties. “I was thrilled when the Gazette asked me for some cover art,” said Charles Fazzino. Not only is the Gazette a great cultural resource for the local community, it also covers the area where I spent many a summer growing up…New Paltz, NY. This is one of the most beautiful areas of our country and often doesn’t get the credit it deserves because of its proximity to New York City. But it’s an area full of rich history, amazing nature, and lively culture. I’m glad to be a part of that.”

The Van Wyck Gazette is a free publication, so take a look for it when you are out and about in Rhinebeck, Poughkeepsie, Wappingers Falls, Fishkill, Beacon, Newburgh….and BEYOND!

It’s Hall of Fame Induction weekend again…and that means it’s time for the annual Fazzino art workshop at the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.  Visitors to the museum on Friday, July 24th from 12-4pm will have the unique opportunity to help create baseball art inspired by the works of 3-Dimensional artist Charles Fazzino. Fazzino artist Diane Stensland will lead the group in creating an oversized version of Charles’s 2015 All-Star Game artwork. Each participant will learn how to glue the artwork and also have the chance to provide their own artistic spin to the final piece. This is a fun and interactive workshop and always draws a great crowd.

While you are there, check out the  Museum’s “Art of Baseball” hall where Fazzino’s original painting “The Curse is Dead” was installed a couple of years ago. It hangs alongside works by artistic giants such as Norman Rockwell, Andy Warhol, and Leroy Nieman. And after you participate in the workshop, take a walk down the street to Stenhaven Gallery where you’ll see an entire collection of Charles Fazzino’s baseball-themed artwork.

We hope you can join us!

The Beauty of Paper Art

We recently came upon a blog posting about some pretty amazing paper artists. The posting was a few years old so we went right to the source for some of the profiled artists and we found some incredible stuff. The way these artists are able to transform simple pieces of paper into intricate, detailed and more impressively, expressive artworks is simply marvelous. Here are two that we found particularly compelling.

Simon Schubert: Mastery Over Paper

German Artist Simon Schubert shows an impressive range of creativity in the way that he uses paper relief to build both wall art and installation-sized art. His mastery over his medium is obvious and the majesty of his creations is stunning at any scale.

Sher Christopher: Paper Sculptor

Sher Christopher may use the same medium as Simon Schubert, but his work couldn’t be any more different. Using paper, Christopher draws us into a magical world of characters all expressed through the sculpting of paper. His website states they his works are “unique, figurative sculptures made purely from paper.” His storytelling ability through the manipulation of paper is uncanny and his awareness of emotion and human positioning is impressive.

Fazzino 101: The 3D Process

20150429_131159

In our Fazzino 101 “Course Introduction,” we discussed some of the factors that have played into Charles Fazzino becoming one of the most influential artists of his day.  His unique and engaging three-dimensional style has certainly helped distinguish him from his peers. We are astounded by how many collectors of Charles Fazzino’s work do not understand the process he uses. To this day, when we give tours of our studio, we find that people believe that the artwork is made three-dimensional by machine – that it is die cut and machine assembled. Not only has this never been the case, but it never will be the case. Every piece of Fazzino fine artwork is cut, glued, and assembled by hand using an exacto knife. The hand work in each piece, in fact, makes it as close to an original work as you can get in a limited edition, and it’s what makes Fazzino’s artwork even more special. So, let’s explain how it’s done.

The Creative Process

Charles Fazzino, like every other artist, starts out with an idea and puts it down in the form of a pencil sketch. This concept sketch can take days, weeks, or even months  to complete and he continues working on it until the entire concept is fleshed out. This phase usually involves a lot of research, as he immerses himself into his subject in order to capture the true essence. Once the sketch is finished, then it is put down with ink, tightened up and then sent to the printer.

Silk Screening

Most Charles Fazzino’s limited edition fine artwork is reproduced using a silkscreen serigraph process. Silk screening is the laying down of colors one by one to built out a complete composition. The process takes six month on average to complete. It is very labor intensive and artistic. The printer begins by covering line art from Charles with a “screen,” or a piece of mylar, and he actually traces off the concept line and tightens it up even further. Then he puts that screen on his silkscreen press which resembles a huge squeegee board, and squeezes black ink through the screen onto paper. After printing the black ink, he ends up with a printed outline of Fazzino’s original concept…almost like a coloring books image.

The coloring books image goes back to Charles and he colors it in using a variety of tools including colored pencils, acrylic paints, pen and ink….depending upon the effect he is trying to render. Then the hand-colored image goes back to the printer.

IMG_6279

The printer now has the difficult job of separating all of the colors in the work onto different screens by hand, tracing each one individually. There could be anywhere from 20 to 50 different colors in one piece of artwork, and the printer is knowledgeable about which order to print them in and which to blend together to result in even more colors.  The printer creates one screen for each color that he determines needs to be printed. For example, he will cover the art with one screen and trace off all of the elements that are one color green..then he puts that aside, picks up another screen and traces off all of the elements that are a different color green….and so on until he ends up with as many screens as there are individual colors. He then proceeds to put each screen on the press with the corresponding color ink and squeegees that color onto maybe 10-20 pieces of paper. He then does that with each successive color, having to clean out the press in between each one.

SilkscreenCollage

After printing all of the colors, the composition comes together and the resulting proof is sent to Fazzino for approval. At this stage, Fazzino will indicate any alterations he wants the printer to make and then the printer has to make those adjustments, by hand, to each of the screens involved. Now the REAL fun starts because, if we are printing a limited edition of 250 pieces, then in order to achieve the 3D effect, the printer will need to print 375 sheets of paper.. That means that 375 sheets of paper are to be individually hand-pulled through the printing press as many times as there are colors in the image. So on day one, he starts with a big stack of blank paper and he puts one color screen on the press with the corresponding paint color and hand pulls 375 sheets of paper through, let’s them dry, and comes back later or the next day to print the next color

If the weather cooperates, he can print one to two colors per day. Why “if the weather cooperates?” Because if the humidity in the air changes too much during the course of printing, then the paper will expand or contract, throwing off the registration of the layers and causing them not to fall in the right places to build out the composition. Then the printer has to wait until the humidity comes back close to the original levels.

To give you an idea of what that looks like, this is a piece where half the colors have been put down and you see the image starting to come to life…color by color…color by color…and that is silkscreen printing.

SKMBT_C28415080715141_0001LRsm

The 3-D Process

The 375 sheets then come to our studios from the printer and that’s where most artists stop. They will put the prints in a flat file, pull them out as they are ordered, roll them up into tubes, and send them to customers. For us, this is where the 3D process begins! Half of the edition is printed on a thick 2-ply or 4-ply museum board and half the edition is printed on a thinner rag museum paper sheet. Our Art Director then works with our 40+ freelance artists who each work to cut, glue, assemble, and embellish the art pieces…all by hand. The cutting is done with an exacto knife and the layering is done using a special kind of silicone. We go through about 40,000 tubes of this silicone each year! It’s an incredibly detailed process, one which Charles Fazzino used to do entirely by himself at the beginning of his career. In order to meet demand, he started hiring freelance and apprentice artists to help him with this process more than two decades ago. He oversees the process, indicating to his artists his likes and dislikes in terms of layering and embellishment and relies on his Art Director to manage the process on a day-to-day basis.

Liberty Stands Tall In the Heart of the Big Apple PROOFlr

Introducing “Liberty Stands in the Heart of NYC” is the latest heart-shaped, New York 3D limited edition pop art release by Charles Fazzino. It is a follow up to a series of very successful NY hearts like “The Heart Beat of Broadway (2013),” “Heartaliciously Broadway (2011),” “and “The Heart of the City (2005)”. “Putting New York in the shape of a heart always made sense to me” said Charles Fazzino. “New York is the heart beat of the world and so many people love and adore it. It works artistically and it definitely works thematically.”

International Hearts

Fazzino hasn’t saved the heart shape exclusively for New York. In fact, he’s utilized in several other cityscapes, including tributes to Santa Barbara, Paris, and London. “The Heart of the West End” was released in 2001 and celebrated the Broadway-esque feel of London’s West End. “For the Love of Santa Barbara,” and “The Heart of Paris” were both recently (2010 and 2001 respectively) very popular on the Fazzino current edition releases lists. Both are also sold out at this point.

Charles Fazzino and his daughter Heather have come together to create a new collection of artwork that effectively melds the styles and subject matter of each artist. They will be a feature at this year’s annual New Rochelle Arts Fest which runs from September 25th through the 27th and involves Open Fazzino Studio Tours.

As a follow up to their first piece “Tagging the Big Apple,” Charles and Heather pay homage to Missy the Dog…the latest edition to the Fazzino family. Charles and Heather have very different and unique styles and when they come together, they create something truly special and dynamic. Heather’s graffiti technique adds a wonderful edge to Charles’s 3D pop.

“Junkyard Dog,” a 32″ x 32″ mixed-media canvas unique is the first in the collection to be completed. Missy sits in the foreground of a Charles Fazzino-esque cityscape. The city, however, is not your typically colorful, fun, narrative Fazzino city. It provides a shadowy, almost sinister backdrop to the junk heap of cars in which Missy finds herself. Clearly, Missy is a dog that can take care of herself…but isn’t she adorable?

“Missy Stencil” is a limited edition giclee based on a stylized version of Heather’s original drawing of Missy. “Missy Stencil” is available in a limited edition of 700 signed and numbered prints.

ArtsFest 2015, sponsored by the New Rochelle Council on the Arts has come and gone and we hope that everyone who came to see our studio had as good a time as we had! This year was a record-breaker with hundreds of attendees taking advantage of the great weather and the open studios. Charles Fazzino was on hand for the entire weekend, meeting and greeting fans, and autographing books and artwork. Our friends at CHOICE of NY also exhibited works by their clients, giving attendees an opportunity to see how powerful art is in our community. Many folks took our behind-the-scenes studio tour and had the opportunity to try their hands at making a Fazzino print.

We certainly hope you will be able to join us next year if you weren’t able to this year. And if you were here, we’re so glad you could make it and hope you’ll come again next year… we’ll have lots of new surprises and cool things in store for you then.

Rocket 2015 1 LR

Charles Fazzino recently completed one of the most interesting commission requests he’s ever received – to create a 3D artwork on an artifact from the age of the Space Race in America. Raymond is a certified expert in the history of a whole line of pot-metal mechanical toy banks that were manufactured to honor the United States’ efforts and achievements in space. It is rare to find one of these antique toys in good shape, but Raymond has made it his mission to collect as many as he can find. In fact, he’s donated full sets of these artifacts to several prominent institutions, including the Smithsonian’s Air & Space Museum.

A few months ago, he reached out to Charles Fazzino in an effort to commission the artist to paint one of these historic banks manufactured in the shape of a space rocket – in particular, a Berzac Missile Bank. Fazzino was fascinated and took on the challenge. What resulted was sheer magic.

CHARLES FAZZINO BERZAC BANK & I 005

Raymond and his hand-painted Fazzino Berzac Bank

We asked Raymond to share a bit of his knowledge with us and here is what he had to say:

Can you talk about the history of the Berzac Missile Banks?

There were three companies producing the banks between the 1940’s and 1970’s. Two brothers, John and Steven Berzac left one of these companies (Duro Mold) and started a new company (Astro) in their garage to manufacture these banks. In the words of Mr. Cary Berzac, John Berzac’s son: “John and Steven were disgruntled at Duro Mold and both left to venture on their own in 1957. Starting in our garage, wooden, then die cast molds were made of their first creation, The Missile Bank. Both brothers worked other jobs while the final details were put in place to start manufacturing. John did all the work creating the dies to pour die cast material in to create the banks. He also designed and created the assembly line tool work so that workers could assemble the banks in a logical process.  Steven created a sales force and organized an office structure so that the company would have  a system in place to order materials and bill buyers for their products. In 1958, they purchased a building on Groesbeck near Shoenherr in Warren, MI.  Relatives, friends of relatives, and a few loyal ex-Duro Mold employees made up the initial workforce of maybe eight to ten in total.  Success came quickly and orders came in in surprising numbers. For the first four or five years, the Missile Bank was their only product. As best as I can recall, the banks were sold to the financial institutions at $1.25 each with discounts given for larger purchases. Not only were the Missile Banks a local success, with many of the largest Detroit area banks purchasing them, but regional sales stated to grow then sales all over the United States and Canada followed. Sales in Europe and South America also impacted profits. I was told that over 2,000,000 Missile Banks were eventually sold…”

What made you decide to commission Fazzino to create a replica of the Guided Missile Bank?

After Astro Manufacturer closed up shop due to the brothers’ deteriorating health in the early 1970’s, the company which actually applied the finish to these banks (both for Duro and for Astro) ended up acquiring the rights to the molds. Vacumet Finishing produced a version of the Berzac Creation Missile Bank in 1975 which came bare from the factory so that the new owner could paint it themselves. This was the only model out of eight to have purposely come bare from the factory! The sheet of paper stickers which accompanied the banks had a Bicentennial theme to it. So, I thought to myself, “Wouldn’t it be cool if I were to have a famous American artist paint mine?”

What is your favorite thing about the Fazzino replica?

I love how he took my vision and made it burst to life in vivid 3-D! I am thrilled by everything about this work, but especially the bridges at the bottom of the bank. Since I am a Native New York-er, my concept was to represent all five boroughs on this rather small artifact, and each of the four bridges does just that.

How did you get into collecting?

Ever since my boyhood newspaper route I’ve had a fondness for coins and money, and as an adult I started to seriously collect coins as a hobby. Well, that hobby lead to another: Antique Mechanical Banks. When I happened upon a Strato Bank in an antique store, I had to research it because I’d never seen anything like it before. The results of several years of research can be read here: http://www.go-star.com/antiquing/space-banks.htm

What else do you have in your collection?

I have two Peter Max Berzac Bank specimens. My Space Race themed collection also includes over 50 banks signed by Astronauts  and NASA Staff from every aspect of America’s Space Program, from Mercury, Gemini and Apollo through Space Shuttle. My non-Space Race collection consists of various types of vintage mechanical and still banks. I also have a modest Globe collection, including vintage Earth and Moon globes.

What are you plans for celebrating the 2016 Centennial?

As a Native New York-er, I’d love to celebrate one last time in the City, but I don’t think that will happen again in this lifetime. So I’ll just snuggle up with my two doggies and a cup or two of hot chocolate and watch the ball drop on the internet…

Last week, Charles Fazzino made his artistic debut in India, participating in a seven-day exhibition of his work in  The Visual Arts Gallery at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi, India. The exhibition, featuring both Fazzino’s work and the dazzling 3D metal works of Israeli artist David Gerstein was appropriately titled 1+1 = 3 and curated by Bruno Art Group CEO Motti Abramovitz. In this instance, these two artists put together were certainly more than the sum of their parts. Together they brought together 3 cultures and a host of dignitaries including representatives from the Israeli Embassy, famous architect Dikshu C. Kukreja, and the notable Dr. Alka Pande.

More than 200 people packed the Habitat Centre for the opening reception on October 28th and Israeli Ambassador Daniel Carmon was kind enough to open his home for a VIP reception honoring both artists the next evening. “Making my debut in India was exciting enough,” said Charles Fazzino. “But being able to do it alongside one of my friends and an artist who I so admire in David Gerstein made it even more special. Our art works together so well. The Centre looked amazing and the people were so accepting of our works. It was very flattering and I was honored to be a part of it. A special thanks to Motti and the crew from Bruno Art Group. They made the entire event possible.”

Fazzino’s work will next be exhibited by  Bruno Art Group in India at the annual India Art Fair from January 28th through the 31st, 2016. Contact Bruno Art Group for more information about Fazzino in India.

Charles Fazzino returned from an international tour a couple of years ago with an idea to create a version of his 3D limited edition artwork printed on aluminum. After almost a year of development, the first “experimental” Moonstruck Over Manhattan was released. It was so well-received that ever since, Fazzino has struggled to keep up with the demand for his images on aluminum. Reflective Shades of Manhattan Island is his latest endeavor and a follow-up to the almost-sold-out Midnight in Manhattan.

Manhattan in Full Color & Monochrome

In the same vein as Midnight in Manhattan, Reflective Shades of Manhattan Island is available as a full color or blue monochromatic print. “I always love coming up with new ideas. I don’t like standing still artistically,” said Charles Fazzino. “This time, I played around with shadow and reverse imagery to come up with a monochromatic print that is quite a bit more dramatic than the full color image. It’s almost like two different editions. I love the color image but I think the blue is particularly striking. I hope my collectors respond well to both.”

Aluminum Trending

When he first started working with the aluminum, Charles Fazzino really had no idea how it would look. In the end, the aluminum background results in even more eye-popping colors and dramatic effect. The 3D effect is handled differently than it is on paper, allowing for the aluminum to shine through where it makes sense. “We spent a lot of time experimenting with the prints on aluminum,” said Fazzino. “I wasn’t sure that we’d be able to preserve the look of the metal while still achieving the vibrancy and level of detail for which I’ve come to be known. In the end, I’m both surprised and proud with how well the artwork has translated to this new medium. It’s opened a whole new door of creativity for me and I’m excited to continue developing it.

The Magical World of David Gerstein

Charles Fazzino recently had the pleasure of having his works exhibited at The Visual Arts Gallery at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi alongside those of world-renowned Israeli artist David Gerstein. While Charles and David have known each other for many years, this was the first major exhibition featuring both artists’ works and it proved what we’ve all known all along… Gerstein and Fazzino go great together!

“I have admired David’s work for many, many years,” said Fazzino. “He’s an innovator in his field… so creative… and so passionate about his art. I love his use of texture, composition, and color and his technique of transforming everyday objects into something exciting and moving is unprecedented.”

Gerstein is most famous for his metal wall and free-standing sculptures but has also dabbled in paper sculpture, painting, drawing, and photography. His works are sought after all over the world and he has participated in hundreds of exhibitions throughout Europe, the US, and Asia. His commission work includes a collection of spectacular outdoor installations in places as far and wide as Thailand, Singapore, and Israel. His themes reflect an open mind and an innocence that infuses his fascination with everyday life. Cows, butterflies, bicyclists, and beautifully crafted brush strokes are some of his most well-known icons. His love of Jazz comes through in many of his compositions, as does his appreciation for the simple things in life… like a good cup of coffee and a beautiful face.

With a flurry of activity, color, and movement, David Gerstein succeeds in taking the everyday objects around him and transforming them into his own optimistic, somewhat frenetic, but always vibrant world.
